Edward Thorp / / Beat the Dealer
In 1962, Dr. Thorp, often called the “Einstein of blackjack,” improved the basic strategy of Baldwin, adding the first card counting techniques. In 1963 he published the book Beat the Dealer (beat the dealer) , quickly became a bestseller.
The casinos were so affected by his discoveries that have begun to change the rules of their games, making it more difficult to beat blackjack. It was at this point that casinos have begun to introduce the automatic card shuffler and increase the number of decks of cards with which blackjack is played.
The book was translated into French by François Montmirel in 1994, alas it is no longer published and found in commerce, I guess the publisher focuses more on the book Montmirel on blackjack .
Thorp and cheating at blackjack
Thorp also chronicles a number of cheating at blackjack, some within the skill with cards (as with the magicians or cartomanes), others take place at the time of the deal (which the dealer distributes the second card, or card in reserve, to save the bank or losing a player). Some dealers were cheating to the casino, some for themselves, but all big risk because they may be removed from the profession for life.
Another type of cheating casinos then whose echoes Thorp is the marking of cards, a barely noticeable mark is added to the logs and other ace of the game: the dealer was in the clever cards he wanted to player. The marking may even take place live, marking the cards the dealer by rounding the corners with a fingernail.
